Frequently asked questions

I’ve never done yoga before. Where do I start?

We offer different types of yoga. You can try out which type fits you best. Even though we offer many types, some do overlap. The important thing is to start your practice. A Hatha yoga class is a good place to start. Perhaps you can start by signing up for a Hatha yoga class for beginners. We recommend that you practice 1 type of yoga for 3 to 6 months instead of switching all too much. For advice regarding which type of yoga fits you best you are free to contact our team at info@saktiisha.com

What should I wear to class?

Wear simple sports clothing as long as it’s comfortable. We work on bare feet so you can leave your shoes in the dressing room. Remove all jewelry because it can get in the way and preferably no perfume.

Should I bring my own yoga mat?

We have mats for use, but after a while you can best buy your own. It is more hygienic for you and for others. saktiisha also sells yoga mats. See our Online Store.

How often should I follow a class and when will I see results?

Depending on your personal goals and wishes it is enough to practice yoga once a week. You can combine it perfectly with other activities and sports and meanwhile find relaxation in yoga. To see change and significant results it is recommendable to practice yoga at least 2 to 3 times per week. Ask yourself whether your goal is to get into shape, find peace of mind or whether you would like to diminish restlessness or pain? Or do you simply wish to meet other people and feel connected?

What is a class like? What can I expect?

The way a class is set up differs per teacher. Most classes are suitable for all levels. We offer different types of yoga. Classes last for an 1h15 minutes. In general we start with a moment of silence, peace and relaxation. After this we start moving by bringing the breath and movements in sync with each other. We usually do some warming up exercises, followed by some seated poses, inversions such as a handstand, headstand or shoulderstand or a variation depending on the level of the class. We usually end the class with a meditation.

Should I eat before a class? Drink water?

It is best not to eat within 2 hours of a class. You can drink water before or following a class.

Should I sign up or can I just join any class?

Yes, signing up for a class is required. This is also required for workshops and courses. If you have a monthly subscription you do not need to sign up for a class. If you are unable to join the class you can let us know through the online app, calling or mailing is not necessary.

Can I join another class on any day of the week with a 10-class card?

Yes, you can, to guarantee your spot you will need to sign up for the class beforehand through our Online Scheduler.

I feel stiff and feel afraid that I will not be able to do the poses. Can I still join a class?

If you come across poses that are too difficult for you, the teacher will provide an alternative. All our teachers are trained to help you find your ideal type of yoga. It is very natural that someone requires an adjustment for poses provided in a group. A stiff body is not a reason to skip yoga, in fact quite the opposite is true! Feel free to ask for help so that you can practice within your own limits in a comfortable and safe way.

I have an injury. Can I still participate?

This depends on the type of injury you have. It is best to let the teacher know before the class starts or contact us beforehand. Yoga can help people identify their limits and become more aware, but during the healing process you may require some more individual attention. Feel free to ask for the possibilities. If you have health issues (illness, injuries) always let the teacher know before the class starts. Some poses may not be good for everyone.

I’m pregnant. Can I still join a class?

If you are pregnant it is important to follow a class provided by a qualified teacher who can guide you during the class. We recommend that you speak to your doctor before attending a dynamic yoga class. Some types of classes may not be suitable. If you have been practicing frequently and for a long time let the teacher know. He or she can help you adjust some parts of the class. Maternity yoga is suitable at all times: there is a Prenatal Yoga class on the schedule, which you can join at any time.

I have the feeling that nothing is happening. Is yoga really helping me?

Yoga is not a competition, it is important not to compare yourself to others. It is not just a workout, rather a spiritual practice, which makes our body stronger, more flexible and healthier. The goal in yoga is to calm the spirit, open the heart and stimulate development. Experience and flexibility are not obligatory when practicing yoga. Yoga is for everyone.

Does yoga help against stress?

Yoga has been helping people deal with physical as well as mental stress for a very long time. It can help you to let go of built up stress and restore the balance in your life. All our classes help decrease stress but if you need to find your inner peace and are looking for a quick way to relax you can best start with a relaxing and gentle class, such as for example Gentle Hatha or Hatha yoga.
